This eight-day one-way cycling cruise runs from Athens up to Corfu, linking the Greek mainland's great archaeological sites with the green Ionian Islands aboard a traditional two-masted motor sailer. Because it travels in a single direction, each day opens a new stretch of coastline rather than retracing the last. The week begins at Piraeus with a crossing to Aegina, where the first ride climbs to the beautifully preserved temple of Aphaia above the sea. In the afternoon the yacht passes through the Corinth Canal, a dramatic six-kilometre cut barely twenty-four metres wide, first imagined in antiquity and finished in 1893, sparing the long haul around the Peloponnese. From Galaxidi a shore excursion reaches Delphi, sanctuary of Apollo and seat of the famous oracle, set spectacularly beneath Mount Parnassus. The route then turns to the islands: a longer crossing to mountainous Ithaca, said to be the homeland of Odysseus, for a scenic round-island ride; the three quiet villages of Meganisi; the hills of Lefkas with an optional detour to the Nidri waterfall; and finally silver-green Paxos, so densely planted with olives it seems to glisten, ringed on a morning tour before the last sail to Corfu. Rides run to around 35 kilometres over hilly terrain, best suited to regular cyclists, with the boat always nearby for a swim stop or a day on deck. The combination is what makes this route special: world-famous antiquities like Delphi and Aegina in the first half, then the unspoiled, Venetian-tinged Ionian archipelago in the second, joined by the unforgettable passage of the Corinth Canal. It is a one-way journey that packs remarkable scenic and cultural variety into a single week.
Route: Athens, Aegina, Corinth Canal, Delphi, Mesolongi, Ithaca, Meganisi, Lefkas, Paxos, Corfu
