This eight-day cycling cruise explores the Gulf of Gokova, the sheltered stretch of Turkish coast between the historic city of Bodrum and the Datca peninsula, sailing round trip from Bodrum aboard a traditional wooden gulet. Largely untouched by mass tourism, the gulf is a scenic gem of pine-clad hills, tiny harbours, clear water and ancient sites, a corner where Turkey feels close to its authentic self. From Bodrum the week rides inland through pine forest and silver-green olive groves to villages such as Etrim, where Turkmen families still keep semi-nomadic traditions and their handicrafts, before quiet coastal stretches to Mazi and the little harbour of Akbuk. A ride from the mountain village of Sarnickoy reaches Akyaka, distinctive for its award-winning timber architecture and its ancient rock tombs. Further days loop through the solitude of the hinterland around Akyaka, thread pine forests to the beautiful English Bay, and cruise to the Yedi Adalar, or Seven Islands, for swimming at anchor. The final riding day crosses to Kormen on the Datca peninsula, climbing to around 450 metres for views over the Greek islands of Nisyros, Tilos and Rhodes before descending to the archaeological site of Knidos, set in one of the loveliest bays on the coast, and the crossing back to Bodrum. Days run to roughly 20 to 44 kilometres over hilly to mountainous terrain on rough but quiet roads, suited to experienced riders, with e-bikes available to ease the climbs. Nights are spent aboard the gulet in secluded anchorages and small ports, with meals from the on-board galley and swim stops in wonderfully clear bays throughout. It is an active, off-the-beaten-track week that rewards cyclists looking for a wilder, quieter side of the Turkish coast.
