Overview

Route: Athens - Kea - Delos - Mykonos - Santorini - Rethymnon - Kythira - Monemvasia - Nafplion - Hydra - Athens

Most Greek island cruises pick either the Cyclades or the mainland. This one takes both, and adds Crete on the way through. In seven nights it runs from Athens out to Delos and Mykonos, down to Santorini and the caldera, across to Rethymnon on the north coast of Crete, then back up the Peloponnese by way of Kythira, Monemvasia and Nafplion before finishing at Hydra.

The mainland half is what makes it unusual. Monemvasia is a Byzantine and Venetian town built onto the seaward face of a rock and invisible from the landward side until you are almost inside it. Nafplion was the first capital of independent Greece and still looks the part, with fortifications on the hills above the harbour and a walkable old quarter. Hydra has no cars at all.

Optional excursions are available at Delos, Santorini, Knossos near Heraklion and Mycenae, and none of them are compulsory: a good part of the appeal is arriving somewhere in the afternoon and being left to your own devices. The vessels carry between 44 and 49 guests.
