Overview

Route: Athens - Nafplion - Monemvasia - Gythion - Pylos - Katakolon - Itea - Corinth Canal - Athens

An archaeology cruise with a guest lecturer on board, sailing the Peloponnese coast and finishing with a transit of the Corinth Canal. Over seven nights it reaches sites that are awkward to combine by road: Epidaurus and its theatre, Mycenae and the Lion Gate, the Byzantine rock town of Monemvasia, Nestor's Palace above Pylos, Olympia inland from Katakolon, and Delphi on the mountainside above Itea.

The lecturer makes the difference. This is a route where the ruins need someone to explain what you are looking at, and the on-board talks connect the classical age, the Roman conquest and the Byzantine centuries into one sequence rather than a series of separate stops.

It is also the only cruise in the Variety Greek programme on full board, with two meals a day beyond breakfast, which suits a week where you are ashore on excursions for much of the day. It runs in the shoulder months, March to April and October to November, when the sites are cool enough to walk and largely empty. Value season departures are considerably cheaper than high season.
