Overview

Route: Athens - Corinth Canal - Kefalonia - Antipaxos - Paxos - Corfu - Ithaca - Nafpaktos - Corinth Canal - Agistri - Aegina - Athens

The Ionian is a different Greece from the Aegean: green instead of bare, Venetian and British rather than Cycladic, and with water that runs to a deep emerald in the bays. Getting there from Athens means transiting the Corinth Canal, which on a 21-cabin yacht is close enough to touch the walls, and the ship does it twice, once in each direction.

Kefalonia is the first landfall, at Sami, the port used as the setting for Captain Corelli's Mandolin and close to the Melissani cave and Karavomilos lake. Then Antipaxos for a beach day and a barbecue, Paxos and the harbour town of Gaios, and a full day on Corfu with the UNESCO-listed Old Town, the Liston and Spianada, and an optional morning run out to Kanoni for Mouse Island and the Vlacherna monastery. Ithaca follows, still trading on Odysseus and reasonably entitled to.

The return leg picks up Nafpaktos or Messolonghi in the Gulf of Patras, then back through the canal to Agistri and Aegina in the Saronic for a last swim. Limited departures in June, July and August only.

Day 1
FridayAthens - Corinth Canal - KefaloniaD

Board at Marina Zea between 2pm and 3pm. The ship leaves soon after the Captain's welcome and the safety drill, and a welcome dinner is served as it makes for the Corinth Canal and the overnight run west to Kefalonia.

Day 2
SaturdaySami, KefaloniaBL

Anchor in a quiet bay near Sami for a morning swim, then lunch on board before berthing at Sami itself, the port used for Captain Corelli's Mandolin. The afternoon is free for the Melissani cave and Karavomilos lake nearby, or an optional tour to the Drogarati cave, Argostoli and the island's wineries.

Day 3
SundayAntipaxos - PaxosBL

An early sail to Antipaxos, a small island with outsized beaches and very clear water, for swimming and a barbecue on board. In the afternoon the ship moves to Gaios, the main town of Paxos, where flower-hung lanes and a handful of good tavernas make for an easy evening. Departure for Corfu after midnight.

Day 4
MondayCorfuBL

A full day on Corfu, docked near the cruise port and within reach of the UNESCO-listed Old Town. An optional morning excursion covers Kanoni for the view of Mouse Island and the Vlacherna monastery, Mon Repo and its gardens, and a guided walk through the Liston and Spianada. A Greek Night is held on board in the evening.

Day 5
TuesdayVathi, IthacaBL

A morning beach stop near Ithaki, then a barbecue lunch as the ship works round to Vathi, the capital and main port. Colourful houses line the waterfront and the tavernas along it are the point of the evening. Overnight in Vathi.

Day 6
WednesdayIthaca - Nafpaktos or MessolonghiBL

A morning departure and a swim stop, then lunch as the ship crosses the Gulf of Patras. The call is at either Nafpaktos, where the ship lies at anchor and guests come ashore by tender, with its Venetian harbour and the castle above the town, or Messolonghi and its lagoons. Dinner ashore is easy in either. The ship sails overnight for the Corinth Canal.

Day 7
ThursdayCorinth Canal - Agistri - AeginaBLD
