Overview

Route: Athens (Lavrion) - Kea - Delos - Mykonos - Samos - Kusadasi - Patmos - Naxos - Sifnos - Athens (Lavrion)

Two countries, one relaxed week at sea. This Athens round trip leaves from Lavrion and works its way east across the Aegean to the Turkish coast before curling back through the Cyclades, so you get the classical sites and the island time in a single seven-night sailing. The ship carries just 24 cabins, which means the small harbours the big ships cannot enter are open to you, and days are built around arriving early and staying late rather than rushing between ports.

Two shore excursions are already in the fare, and they are the two you would have chosen anyway: the sacred island of Delos, and Ephesus with the Library of Celsus and its marble street. Between them sit Mykonos for an afternoon and evening, Samos and the harbour at Pythagorion, an overnight in Kusadasi, and Patmos with the Grotto of the Apocalypse and the Monastery of St John above Chora. Naxos and Sifnos close the week with the food and the villages the Cyclades are known for.

It suits travellers who want the headline sights of the eastern Aegean without a coach tour, and who would rather unpack once. Swim stops are worked into the sailing days whenever the weather allows.

Day 1
FridayAthens (Lavrion) - KeaD

Board at Lavrion in the early afternoon and meet the crew over a welcome drink as the ship sails for Kea, the closest of the Cyclades and one of the least visited. Dinner is served on board, and there is time afterwards to walk the harbour front at Korissia.

Day 2
SaturdayDelos - MykonosBL

Wake at Delos, the mythological birthplace of Apollo and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for the included guided visit to the ruins. Lunch is served as the ship crosses to Mykonos, where the afternoon and evening are yours for the windmills, Little Venice and the whitewashed lanes of Chora. Midnight departure for Samos.

Day 3
SundaySamosBD

Arrive at Pythagorion, the harbour named for the mathematician born on the island. Options ashore include the Heraion sanctuary and the Monastery of Panagia Spiliani above the port, or simply the town, its craft shops and its tavernas. The ship stays overnight in port.

Day 4
MondayKusadasi, TurkeyBD

The included excursion runs to Ephesus, among the most complete classical cities anywhere on the Aegean, with the Library of Celsus, the marble street and the great theatre. Back in Kusadasi there is free time for the bazaar before dinner on board. Overnight in port.

Day 5
TuesdayPatmosBD

Patmos is quiet in a way the busier islands are not. The two UNESCO sites, the Grotto of the Apocalypse and the Monastery of St John above the medieval town of Chora, can be visited on an optional excursion, and lunch ashore in one of the tavernas is easy to arrange. Midnight departure for Naxos.

Day 6
WednesdayNaxosBL

The largest of the Cyclades and the most fertile, Naxos rewards a day spent inland: the mountain village of Apeiranthos, the citrus museum at Halki, and Filoti below Mount Zas. In the evening the Old Town is worth an unhurried walk for the cheeses, the local potatoes and the mix of Venetian and Cycladic building. Overnight in port.

Day 7
ThursdaySifnos - LavrionBD

Sifnos is the cook's island of the Cyclades, with its pottery, its marked walking trails and a run of hillside villages. Lunch ashore in a taverna is the best way to use the morning. The ship sails for Lavrion in the early afternoon and a farewell dinner is served as the sun goes down over the Aegean.

Day 8
FridayAthens (Lavrion)B

Breakfast on board, then disembark at Lavrion between 8.30am and 9.00am.
